About Us

Front Entrance 3More than twelve years ago a group of dreamers imagined a unique, hands-on children’s museum that would allow visitors to explore and learn about Judaism. From pie-in-the sky thinking to concept on paper to generous funding, Shalom Street became a reality. In 2003 this hands-on discovery destination opened its doors.

Shalom Street opened with a very innovative permanent display, with the very best in audio and visual aids utilizing the most advanced technological knowledge available. In addition to the permanent display, Shalom Street rented temporary exhibits from various Jewish and non-Jewish museums to enhance the programming.

In 2010 the Jewish Community Center took over the supervision of Shalom Street Museum and subsequently hired key personnel to run the day to day operations. Rabbi Rob Morais, Director and Andee Liberman, Assistant Director have been at the helm ever since .

The functionality of Shalom Street has evolved since 2011. Jewish education is now fully integrated into the programming for camp and preschool groups. During the summer months Shalom Street is an integral part of the Center Day Camps, while in the winter months we run the Jewish education programs for the Sarah and Irving Pitt Childhood Development Center. In addition Shalom Street has become a destination for all of our community synagogue schools, day schools, pre-schools, and many other Jewish and non-Jewish groups.

Further, to deliver a more dynamic experience, Shalom Street now re-creates the museum each year, exploring different themes or topics. The museum just launched its newest exhibit, “Across the Board – From Dreidel to Xbox. Here is a recap of the prior themes:

  1. Tales of Our Tribes – which explored the 12 Tribes of Israel.
  2. Shomrei Adamah: Earth, Wind, Water and Fire – this exhibit explored the four basic elements of creation within Jewish tradition.
  3. Passport to Israel – an exhibit that celebrated the 65th birthday of the modern state of Israel.
